28 Days of Sunshine

I love a prompt. I’m a little addicted to collecting prompts. I have a spreadsheet with literally thousands of prompts, in case I ever run out of ideas for things to draw - which is highly unlikely anyway.

Naturally that love of prompts means I love monthly art challenges. I have a spreadsheet with a list of monthly art challenges too. Are you surprised?

In February my friend Adele from Dellies Designs ran a prompt challenge, and I had to partake.

An illustrated prompt list titled "28 Days of Sunshine Vol. 2" by Dellies Designs for February. It includes daily creative prompts such as "1. Birdsong," "2. Coffee," "3. Adventure," and so on up to "28. Butterfly." There’s also a 29th prompt asking, "What brings you sunshine?" A cute penguin holding a yellow sun is illustrated at the bottom right. The text encourages participants to use the hashtag #28daysofsunshine and tag @delliesdesigns on social media.

I’ve long-since given up on the obsession with completing monthly challenges. My completionist brain wants me to, but then I end up still doing October’s challenge in January and I get frustrated & angry with myself. So I’ve managed to wean myself off that particular completionist habit. I did do a bunch of these ones though.

I did the first one - Birdsong.

A cute illustration of three cartoon birds stacked on top of each other, each with a different color: purple, pink, and blue. The purple bird on top sings, depicted with musical notes around it. The drawing is signed with "CH" and the date "25/1/24." Below, there’s the hashtag #28daysofsunshine and the tag @delliesdesigns.

And even though I don’t like coffee, I did the second one - Coffee.

A hand-drawn sketch of a coffee bag with coffee beans inside, featuring a CBC label. Below, there is text: "#28daysofsunshine @delliesdesigns".

That one even sparked a sticker set idea which has been added to my list of sticker set ideas.

A sketch on a spiral-bound notebook of sugar cubes, teabag, teacup and saucer, teaspoon, to-go cup, and teapot. Handwritten labels and notes are around the sketches.

Day 11 was Pizza - and because February 9th was National Pizza Day and February 10th was National Umbrella Day, I did a pizza umbrella. (Both American National days, but I have a blog about all of that coming soon.)

A drawing of an umbrella shaped like a pizza, with various toppings like pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, and peppers. It’s labeled "National Pizza Day - Feb 9th" and "National Umbrella Day - Feb 10th." The drawing is signed with "CH" and the date "9/2/24."

Day 12 was Yellow. And I’ve been loving doing pattern doodles with a yellow highlighter fineliner. I just love how it looks.

A square pattern composed of numerous tightly packed, yellow, concentric circles on a beige background. The circles overlap and create a textured, intricate design. Handwritten text "CH 12-2-24" appears on the left side of the square.

Day 16 was Polka Dot. Naturally the first thing you thing of is a hippo. Right?

A cartoon hippo with a playful smile stands on a yellow plaid background. The grey hippo, adorned with colorful polka dots all over its body, has large, expressive eyes that add to its adorable appearance. The artist's signature, "CH 14.3.24," is at the bottom right.

 Day 20 was Candy Floss.

A whimsical illustration of a rainbow-colored lollipop with a cute smiley face, big black eyes, and blushing cheeks. The lollipop has rough, wavy edges and is set against a yellow marbled background. The artist's initials, CH 11-22-24, are in the bottom right corner.

Day 25 was Daisy.

Because 2024 is a leap year, there was a Day 29. Adele decided to let us draw what brings us sunshine. Now, I don’t actually like sunshine. It’s too bright and too warm. But something that I love is rainbows and doodles.

An abstract image featuring intertwining white patterns and wavy lines set against a vibrant gradient background transitioning through shades of pink, purple, blue, green, yellow, and orange.

Thanks for the prompt list Adele! I’m looking forward to next year.
